What a policy actually costs depends on the address, the size of the home and the sum insured. A quotation gives the figure for your own situation.
What the policy covers
Contents insurance answers for sudden and unforeseen damage to the things in the home, and for the things themselves going missing after a break in.
- Fire, smoke and scorching.
- Theft after a break in, and the damage the break in caused.
- Water from a burst pipe, a washing machine or an overflowing bath.
- Storm damage to things in the garden and in a locked shed.
- Breakage of a mirror or a glass table top, when it is on your policy.
What the policy does not cover
- Cash, cheques and documents.
- Things kept for a business, and stock of any kind.
- Wear, scratching and things simply getting older.
- A single item worth more than the amount named on your schedule, unless it is listed by name.
- Anything left in an unlocked car or an unlocked shed.
The conditions document names every situation the policy leaves out, and it is the document a claim is assessed against.
The conditions in plain words
The sum insured is the most the policy pays out for the contents as a whole. It is set when the policy starts, and it is on the schedule beside the excess.
Things are settled on what a comparable item costs today, unless the item is older than the age named in the conditions, in which case it is settled on what it is worth now.
A theft has to be reported to the police, and the police report goes in with the claim.
Your policy schedule
The schedule names the address, the sum insured, the excess and the date the policy started. Any item listed by name is on it too.
Your policy reference is on the first page of the schedule. It is two letters and four digits, and quoting it in a message saves a round of questions.
Questions about contents insurance
How do I know what sum to insure for?
Walk through the house room by room and add up what it would cost to buy the contents again. Most people come out higher than they expect, because it is the ordinary things that add up.
Is a bicycle insured?
A bicycle is insured inside the home and in a locked shed. Outside the home it needs a bicycle policy, because a bicycle left in the street is a different thing to insure.
Is a child living away from home still insured?
A child in student accommodation is insured for a limited amount, named in the conditions. Above that amount the room needs a policy of its own.
